La. ranks high in job growth report

Louisiana was among the states with the highest job growth between January 2011 and 2012, as the state’s economy was boosted by exports of energy and agricultural products, according to the National Chamber Foundation’s study “Enterprising States.”

The study says better economic growth results when states focus their resources in six main areas: productivity and livability; tax structure and regulatory burden; exports and trade; infrastructure; fostering innovation and entrepreneurship; and cultivating a strong talent pipeline.

Louisiana ranked second in growth in the share of national exports, according to the study. Louisiana has the only U.S. port capable of handling giant super ships.

Louisiana also ranked second in per-capita income growth and tax environment for new firms.

The state ranked third in export intensity and export intensity growth; fourth in college affordability; seventh in business closure rate and short-term job growth; ninth in job-placement efficiency; and 10th in tax environment for mature firms.
