San Diego-based Sempra Energy announced Tuesday that it has signed deals with Mitsubishi Corp. and Mitsui & Co. Ltd to develop and build an LNG export facility in Hackberry.

The facility would be capable of exporting 1.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. Sempra said construction on the project is expected to start in late 2013 with operations to commence in late 2016.

The agreements mean the three firms will fund all development expenses, including design, permitting and engineering for the project.

“These agreements with Mitsubishi and Mitsui represent a significant step forward in the development of a liquefaction facility at our Louisiana LNG terminal to support international natural gas markets,” Mark A. Snell, president of Sempra Energy, said in a news release.
