I recently had the opportunity to spend time with middle school students involved in a summer leadership program. It was a great experience. I shared lessons with them about leadership and planning for their future. They also shared with me their thoughts about the world they are growing up in and the future that they see for their generation. At the end of our valuable time together, I came away with one glaring conclusion…the future of Louisiana is very bright, and it is because of our young people.
As students across Louisiana return to school this week, they should know that their family, friends and teachers are not the only ones rooting for their success. That is because oil and natural gas companies, energy workers and the many allies of our Louisiana industry are in the classroom! Having worked for the industry now for 17 years, I am continuously amazed at the commitment our industry makes to education at all levels. LMOGA member companies demonstrate that commitment in countless ways. They host school supply distribution events in their communities. They are present on the first day of school as cheerleaders for students walking off the bus into the new school year. They are the providers of grants to teachers who desire to make the classroom experience one a child will remember forever. They are they the role models that inspire students to become future industry employees through STEM initiatives and facility tours. They are a consistent presence and resource for students in the communities where they operate, and that list goes on and on!
An early role model of mine, the late St. Charles Parish Superintendent of Schools Dr. Rodney Lafon, constantly spoke of the need for “continuous improvement” and “lifelong learning” in education. As an industry leader, I am proud of the work our industry does to make that a reality. As the energy industry evolves, we aim to continuously improve knowing that we will only get better if learning never stops. I want to say thank you to our member companies making a difference and contributing to the future success of our students. Your knowledge, experience and diversity of thought is needed in our classrooms if we are going to have the energy workforce we need in the decades ahead.
On behalf of the LMOGA team and the entire Louisiana oil and natural gas industry, I want to wish our students, parents, school faculty and leaders in education the best wishes for a successful 2024-2025 school year!
