Marathon Petroleum Corp. expanded its retail business into the Louisiana market on Thursday with the opening of a new branded gas station in Reserve.

The station, located at 4450 West Airline Highway, is Marathon's first location in the state.

The company made a major move in May to grow its national retail footprint, acquiring more than 1,300 gas stations up and down the East Coast from Hess Corp. in a $2.87 billion deal. The purchase also included pipeline capacity and transport trucks.

Marathon is now one of the largest owners and operators of convenience stores in the nation, with locations in 23 states.

Marathon has a long history in Louisiana, though largely in the refinery industry.

Marathon Oil Corp. purchased the Garyville refinery in 1976 and has operated it since, overseeing several major expansions to the facility.

Marathon Petroleum was formed as a spin-off of Marathon Oil in June 2011.
