Apache Corp. has opened a public natural gas fueling station on East Verot School Road in Lafayette, the Houston-based oil and gas company announced Thursday.
The announcement comes as Lafayette city-parish government is building its own publicly accessible natural gas fueling station that is expected to be opened later this year.
Natural gas is touted as a cheaper and cleaner-burning alternative to gasoline, and several public agencies and private companies in the area have been eyeing a switch to natural-gas vehicles.
Lafayette has five natural gas-powered municipal buses and has plans to gradually transform its entire fleet.
City-parish government has also converted 51 other government vehicles to run off natural gas, city-parish Director of Traffic and Transportation Tony Tramel said.
The Apache fueling station is at 515 East Verot School Road.
